Format & Activities

Group sessions are a 10-week cohort in which we meet for group activities, individual reflections and sharing, psychoeducation and learning, practice of mindfulness and self-awareness activities, and independent exercises to implement before we meet again. (Don’t worry, “homework” is always optional!)

You can expect these types of activities in our group:

  • Check-in is an opportunity for you to share how you’re showing up at group that day - what headspace you’re in, what has been difficult recently, etc. It’s also an opportunity to meet others where they are, and support them in however they’re showing up at the moment.

  • Every session will include time for facilitated open sharing. While participation is optional, many find comfort in knowing they’re not alone and hearing from others who share similar experiences. This supportive environment fosters connection and validation.

  • Our group leader, Lindsey Gilbert, will guide you through discussion of a specific topic related to grief, and then will facilitate questions and reflection on the week’s topic. These questions and reflections are designed to help you process grief and validate, normalize, and understand your experience in a supportive group environment.

  • Each group meeting will also focus on a coping skill related to grief. Coping skills are typically based in cognitive behavior therapy, and address how you think, speak to yourself, and relate to your thoughts and emotions.

  • Near the end of each group session, you will create a memorial for your loved ones and connect with them with a ceremonial reflection and moment of silence.

  • Check-outs circle back to let each people re-connect with themselves and ground before stepping back into the world.

  • “Homework” is typically a one pager that reminds you of what we worked on in group, and helps you reflect on it throughout the week. The intention is to help bring your group work into your daily life, increasing the meaning and support that you find in group.

Why address grief and loss in a group setting?

Grief can feel isolating and confusing - often, people around us mean well, but respond in ways that try to help us “feel better” or find some reason that the loss occurred - you’ve heard it before, something like “everything happens for a reason” or “they’re at peace now.”

A group setting allows us to connect with others who can understand how we feel, without platitudes. We get to experience the common humanity of self-compassion as we meet, and the group facilitator helps form community and connection that can be important in the healing process.
